Introduction

This week a break from the Peter series as I have been asked to look at the subject of money and giving

Loving Money - Ecclesiastes 5:10-17

  • Money does not satisfy
  • Money attracts hangers on
  • Too much money disturbs our sleep

Loving Money - 1 Timothy 6:6-10

  • Material possessions are of no eternal value

Giving it Away - Mark 12:41-44

  • When we become a Christian Jesus becomes the Lord of every area of our lives, which includes our money
  • The issue is not how much of our money we should give away but how much should we keep for ourselves

Giving it Away (Tithing)

  • Under the OT covenant every Israelite was required to give 10% of their income to support the priests and to maintain the Temple
  • Similar principle applies to us

Giving it Away (Giving to the Poor)

  • Giving to the poor was required by OT Law and we see the same principle in the NT GBC Finances

Application

What have we learnt this morning?

Challenges for us:

  • Everyone to review the amount of money that they give away
  • Consider giving to GBC by standing order
  • Every UK taxpayer to fill in a gift aid form
  • Consider your giving to the poor

Application

  • Charles Ryrie, "How we use our money demonstrates the reality of our love for God, in some ways it proves our love more conclusively than depth of knowledge, the length of prayers or prominence of service."
