Introduction

• Peter wrote this letter to encourage believers so that they would stand firm in their faith even when under pressure

• Christians disagree about what these verses mean

• Part of the background is the story of Noah and the book 1 Enoch

• I believe v19 refers to Jesus after His resurrection but before His ascension going to the place where some evil spirits were imprisoned since the time of Noah and proclaiming to them His victory and their eternal defeat

All Powers Must Submit (v 18—22)

• Everyone outside the ark perished because of God’s judgment …

•  … all today will perish unless they are saved in baptism through the resurrection of Jesus

•   Pledge of a good conscience” probably refers to the vows made at baptism

Done With Sin (4 v 1—6)

• The behaviour outlined in v3 was normal social life at that time

•  When new converts changed their behaviour former friends became abusive

•  But Peter reminded them of the eternal outcome

Application

•  What have we learnt this morning?

•  Stand firm because;

•  Jesus died for us

•  God is in control

•  All evil powers are defeated

•  Everyone will face judgement

•  We have eternal life
