The book of Exodus, and the events narrated in it, are probably the most significant part of the Old Teastiment. Some parts of the story are well known  but many Christians do not understand the significance of the events for themselves today.

Text Notes

Introduction

  • The book of Exodus, and the events narrated in it, are probably the most significant part of the OT
  • Some parts of the story are well known  but many Christians do not understand the significance of the events for themselves today

The Pursuit (14:1-18)

  • The underlying issue here was who did the people of Israel belong to?
  • Fear always blinds people to faith possibilities
  • Their actions needed to be guided by God’s word
  • Stop praying and start moving

Deliverance (14:19-31)

  • Walking between the walls of water must have required faith
  • This was an event of cosmic significance
  • This is about the creation of God’s people …
  • … while the bodies of the Egyptians reminded them that their old life had gone forever

Who is Like You? (15:1-21)

  • Chadwick, “like all great poetry, this song is best enjoyed when it is neither commentated upon nor paraphrased but carefully read and warmly felt”

Application

  • What have we learnt this morning?
  • Do not be afraid
  • God will fight for you...
  • ... but you need to do what He tells you
  • We are a new creation, the old has gone
