Introduction
  • This week and next we are going to look at some aspects of what it means to be a part of church
One Spirit (v 12-13)
  • Bittlenger, “In order to accomplish His work today, Jesus has a body that consists of living human beings”
  • Previous distinctions are no longer relevant, our common identity in Christ is far more important
Interdependence (v 14-21)
  • Every part is needed, and every part needs all the other parts, because we are different; this is how God designed us
No Division (v 22-27)
  • It is the hidden parts that tend to have the most important functions
  • In our British culture we find it much easier to suffer with someone who is hurting than to rejoice together
Application
  • What have we learnt this morning about being church?
  • We are Christ’s body
  • Our common identity in Christ is more important than our differences
  • We need each other, God has made us different so that we can be effective together, united in our diversity
  • Each of us has something vital to contribute
