Introduction
-
These events took place around 1000 BC
-
Saul was the first king of Israel but he had “rejected the word of the Lord” and was rejected by God as king, but he continued to rule
Samuel’s Obedience (v 1-5)
-
Samuel was grieving over what might have been
-
Effectively serving God does not mean being free from weakness
-
David’s great grandmother was a Moabitess
The Anointing (v 6-13)
-
“Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart”
-
The anointing indicated that God had chosen David and was now committed to him
David at Court (v 14-23)
-
Centre stage apparently were King Saul and his difficulties, but God was writing a different story
-
Saul unknowingly brought his successor into the royal court
Application
-
What have we learnt this morning?
-
Weakness is OK providing we trust God by doing His will
-
“Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart”
-
God writes His own story
