Introduction
  • These events took place around  1000 BC
  • Saul was Israel’s fist king, however he had “rejected the word of the Lord” and was rejected by God as king, although he continued in office
David and Jonathan (v 1-5)
  • Jonathan was the crown prince
  • He accepted that God’s Spirit was on David, there was no jealousy, rather than trying to hold onto his position he voluntarily gave it up
Saul’s Jealousy (v 6-16)
  • Saul’s jealousy coloured his judgement; the song was complementary to both of them
  • Saul saw that God’s favour was with David and he imagined that David was a direct threat
David’s Marriage (v 17-30)
  • The depravity of Saul’s character is seen clearly
  • Saul’s motive was to tempt David into valiant behaviour that would lead to his death
Application
  • How does this passage apply in our situations?
  • Jealousy is one of the devil’s strategies for destroying relationships
  • We should trust our destiny to God, do what He asks of us and leave the consequences to Him
